A question we regularly get asked is how does the NuVsion Boiler Energy Saver work?

In this article we address the question and explain where the Energy savings are made on your boiler.

What does the Boiler Energy Saver do?

This is a very effective electronic control that modifies the running pattern of a boiler in order to save energy.

How does it do this?

The NuVision Boiler Energy Saver (BES) monitors the flow and return water temperatures leaving and returning to the boiler. In doing this, the BES unit accurately switches the boiler off at the correct temperature. Further savings are made when the BES unit compares the rate of temperature rise and fall from the flow and return and either holds the boiler on for slightly longer or switches it off sooner depending on its prediction. This reduces boiler cycling which is common in most boiler and wastes energy.

What sort of saving can I make?

As with most technologies the greater the energy use then in monetary terms the greater the energy saved. However on average we would look at a 15% saving on hot water and heating bills for typical domestic gas / LPG/ Oil boilers. This can rise higher but is dependent on many factors like boiler age, running schedules and maintenance.

What sort of boiler does it operate with?

The BES will save energy on most domestic boiler running on Gas, LPG or oil. It does not work with Immersions, heat pumps or electric boilers.

Boiler types include ‘system boilers’ non condensing and condensing boilers.

I have a combi boiler!

Combi boilers operate differently from system boilers in that the domestic hot water is heated directly. The BES unit cannot make any savings on this system but can on the heating side of the Combi boiler. To improve these savings the NuVision Boiler Energy Saver Plus is available which comes with and external temperature sensor. This allows the BES unit to vary the flow temperature to the radiators dependent on the outside air temperature. On warmer days you require less energy to heat a home than on colder days – the plus model adjusts this automatically saving you energy.

Do I have to make any alterations to my existing controls?

BES is installed after your existing time clock and the boiler thermostat is turned up above the operating temperature of the BES control and so the original controls remain intact. Once the BES has been set on installation should not require any further adjustment. There are adjustable temperature settings for flow and return temperatures which is set to suit the property type and size.

What happens if the BES unit fails?

This is very unlikely; the Boiler Energy Saver has an exceptional reliability record, however in the unlikely case of failure a bypass switch is fitted to allow the boiler to resume firing using the internal thermostat.

I have 2 boilers.

The NuVision Boiler Energy Saver is also available as a commercial version that will run two boilers on a common header or one boiler on two different temperature regimes. This unit also has a built in 7 day time clock and additional facilities.
